Tonight we have the opportunity to watch the International Space Station flyover Boston and the surrounding areas.

According to WBZ-4 Meteorologist Terry Eliasen, be prepared to head outside on this clear night for the viewing at/before 8:01 p.m. and again at 9:37 p.m. and be sure to look in the West-Northwest direction. You’ll have approximately a four minute viewing window for the first flyby, followed by a 1 minute window on the second flyby.

Here’s some facts pertaining to the I.S.S. according to NASA:

  • There has been 193 spacewalks at the I.S.S. since 1998 (144 U.S./49 Russian)
  • 222 individuals from 18 different countries have visited the I.S.S.
  • Station Commander Scott Kelly holds the NASA record for the “Most Cumulative Days In Space” with 520 and he also holds the record for the “Longest Single Spaceflight” with 340 days.
  • I.S.S. is larger than a six-bedroom house and weighs almost 1 million pounds (approximately 925,000 pounds), which is the equivalent of more than 320 cars.
  • Electrical power for the I.S.S. is supplied by an acre of solar panels.

So if you can remember and have the time tonight to head outside to check out this cool event, be sure to do it! Maybe you could even set an alarm to make it happen.
